Elon Musk has made some of the boldest claims in the AI industry about Grok 5 — the next major model from his company xAI. In mid-to-late 2025 he said it had “a shot at being true AGI,” estimated a “10% and rising” chance it would achieve AGI (or something indistinguishable from it), and at one point simply answered “Grok 5” when asked which upcoming system might cross that threshold.
That’s not a small statement. AGI — Artificial General Intelligence — remains the holy grail of the field: an AI that can reason, learn, and adapt across virtually any intellectual domain at or beyond human level. So is Grok 5 actually going to get us there? Here’s what we know as of August 2026.
